Join us for a special jazz session with Duo Exchange! I'm Tomoko Abe, and I'm so excited to share this performance with the incredibly talented pianist, James Addis. We had a wonderful time playing some of our favorite jazz standards for you. In this video, you'll hear our duo take on Bill Evans' gorgeous "Turn Out the Stars," the timeless "It Could Happen to You," and the Bossa Nova gem "If You Never Come to Me." [ About the Artists ] Tomoko Abe (Vocal) is a jazz vocalist, composer, and arranger originally from Japan. After beginning classical piano at five, she discovered jazz in Tokyo, quickly launching a professional singing career. She furthered her studies in Canada, becoming the first Japanese applicant accepted into Humber College's Bachelor of Music in Voice program. Tomoko has collaborated with jazz legends like Neil Swainson and Reg Schwager, and in 2021, she released her debut EP, The Opening Song. Her work, including her recent release Chasing Shadow with TSJC Collective, bridges cultures through original compositions and expressive performances. James Addis (Piano) is a dynamic, up-and-coming jazz pianist known for his "big sound" and inventive, sophisticated style, reminiscent of Oscar Peterson and Monty Alexander. Since discovering jazz at age nine, James has become an audience favorite, performing at major venues across Ontario including Koerner Hall. He's had the privilege of studying with esteemed musicians like Frank Falco and Jeff Hamilton, and has performed with notable instrumentalists such as Chris Potter and Mike Murley. James has been recognized as a rising star, showcased on JazzFM91’s Jazzology program and participating in the TD Toronto Jazz Festival's Jazz Musician Intensive. Find us online! Practice for 1 minute! ... or MORE!　 忙しい人もまずは１分から！Vocal warming upはじめましょう！ 今日は『Nasal Resonance & Vowels』（鼻腔共鳴と母音）をやってみましょう。 『”Ng”("Sing"に含まれる”ng”音) ＆vowels (i-e-a-o-u)母音』を歌います。 口角回りの筋肉や顎の関節の適度なリラックスを意識し、 それぞれの母音がどのように響いているのかに注意を向けて、一番クリアに聴こえるプレイスメントを探ってみましょう。 もちろん、ブレスサポートも忘れずに行います。 Let's try to relax the muscles around your mouth and be aware of the jaw joint's comfort level. Pay attention to how each vowel sounds and try to find the placement that sounds the clearest. And of course, don't forget to maintain good breath support throughout.
